What the digits encode

Most manufacturers use the reference to encode the model line, case material, bezel, and sometimes the generation. Two watches that look similar can carry very different references — and very different values — based on material and configuration.

Why it matters when buying

Always match the reference on the paperwork and caseback to the watch in the photos. If a listing is vague about the reference, ask. Precision here protects you.
