An authorized dealer (AD) sells brand-new watches straight from the manufacturer with the full factory warranty — but at fixed retail, and often with a waitlist. The grey market sells genuine watches through unofficial channels: usually cheaper and available now, but typically with a store warranty rather than the brand's. Authorized dealers (ADs)

ADs are official brand partners who source directly from the manufacturer. The upside is certainty: a genuine watch, the original packaging, the full manufacturer's warranty, and brand-backed after-sales service. The downside is that pricing is set by the brand — so there are rarely discounts — and the most in-demand models can carry long waitlists or be effectively unobtainable. An AD is the right call if you want a brand-new watch with the factory warranty and you're willing to pay retail and wait.

The grey market

The grey market refers to genuine watches sold outside a brand's official channels — sourced from ADs in other regions, surplus distributor stock, and similar routes. The appeal is real: lower prices, and access to discontinued or hard-to-get references, usually with the convenience of buying online. The trade-off is service and warranty. Grey-market watches often come with a store warranty rather than the brand's, and some manufacturers may decline to service pieces that have been altered or lack documentation. New grey-market watches sometimes still carry the manufacturer's warranty, but it varies — so it's worth confirming before you buy.

Independent dealers
